Synthetic media is an up-and-coming trend that’s set to completely overhaul our media landscape – there’s a reason they’re calling it the fourth media revolution. Can we still believe our eyes?
Research shows that many people are unfamiliar with synthetic media. But since my target group will be confronted with it in very short order, bringing them up to speed quickly is vital. Many young people also struggle under dominant online visual culture with its ample manipulation. It’s getting hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake. As synthetic media continues its ascent, things will only become more pliable as the boundaries between real and fake erode. This makes many people worried about synthetic media. I’m collaborating with Vice Nederland to show that there’s no need for concern, as it can also be a source of fun things as well. Still, its potential risks shouldn’t be underestimated.
