For ages I have been fascinated by the western obsession with time management and high-speed living, where “being busy” seems to be held up as a virtue.
Increasingly performance society is impacting our health. Whiling away the hours, dallying or as the Dutch people call it “niksen”: a wonderful way to spend your time without having to worry about making yourself useful or making progress. It helps you relax and boosts creativity. Sadly though, we neglect our “me time” as we have a constant need to keep ourselves busy and feel guilty when we have got nothing to do.
“The visual poetry of doing nothing” is a concept for Studio Yen with the aim of improving the perception of loafing and thus making it socially acceptable. Rather than associating it with laziness and carelessness, it should be thought of as a way to unwind. This is the message that is presented in a coffee table book and a short video.
