Iconisch design: ode aan de bezem
The form and tactuality of universal, simple objects.
The endless development and advancement of technology and the digital world has instilled an increasing desire for simple, artisanal objects. They provide us with a lost sense of tactuality and allow us to create, work and design in the physical world. Everyday household objects are given new meaning as we reappreciate them. In a world of digital isolation, everyday objects allow us to experience our shared humanity again.
A series of tapestry collages for gallery and design shop @droog, incorporating a mundane household object: the broom. This “dumb thing”, with its age-old design, is given new meaning as a special icon, but it can also be removed from the tapestry to sweep the floor. Complementing the series is a range of labelled brooms, miniature fabric collages, and a theme booklet about brooms. iconisch design: ode aan de bezem (“Iconic design: ode to the broom”) elevates the common household object to the status of design, in order to make owning and using one appealing again.
