Ode to the female athlete
There was a time when sport was off-limits to women. People were afraid that if women were granted access, they’d start taking over other parts of the male domain, and men would lose their hegemony. In the early twentieth century, the first green light was hesitantly given to aspiring women athletes.
Research has shown that even today, men prevail in numbers when it comes to sport. Women in sport are still paid less while receiving less publicity. While women’s standing in sport has increased a great deal, even in 2021 they aren’t standing as equals with men yet.
In association with Nike, I’ve taken this history of women in sport and used it as a basis for three issues and a collection item. The focus is on the strength of the female athlete.
