The walk of blame
“That’s just what you get when you…” The anger and frustration I felt about this sentence is what gave rise to this project.
Victim blaming is what happens when the victim of sexually transgressive behaviour is held responsible for the act, and is also described as the second rape. Research has shown that 11 percent of young Dutch men believe that a woman is asking to be groped or assaulted when she goes out alone at night.
The walk of blame is my way of holding up a literal mirror to people, to make them see the gravity and extent of the issue. This interactive route, set out in Amsterdam in collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam and Centrum Seksueel Geweld, allows victims to share their personal experiences and offers information about the topic.
