Visual Storytelling

Visual Storytelling is about effectively conveying messages, strengthening brand identity, and creating impact through visuals. It combines strategy, design, and communication techniques to engage audiences, evoke emotion, and communicate complex ideas clearly. By using composition, color, form, movement, and other visual elements, you can tell a powerful story—without the need for words.

Visual storytelling plays a key role in creating impactful visual communication and drawing your audience into your narrative. It enhances customer engagement and helps you achieve your objectives. This skill can be applied across a wide range of fields, such as content creation, marketing & branding, photography, internal communication, and more.

Basic knowledge of Adobe and InDesign is required for this module. You can find the fundamentals module [here].

Theme 1

Introduction

In the first week, we dive into the world of visual storytelling. What makes a story visually powerful? You will learn how to use different images to convey emotions and narratives. We explore original visual stories and create inspiring mood boards. As a creative exercise, you gather visual sources of inspiration and develop a mood board for a brand or story from your own professional context.

Theme 2

Composition and storyboarding

This week focuses on composition and the use of storyboards. You’ll learn how images relate to each other and how to harness the impact of visuals to tell a story. We explore techniques for creating new images by combining existing ones (image manipulation). You’ll discover the added value of a storyboard for developing a visual narrative. In the creative exercise, you’ll learn how to tell a powerful story to a specific audience within a single composite image.

Color and Emotion in Visuals

Kleur is een essentieel onderdeel van visual storytelling. Deze week onderzoeken we de betekenissen van kleuren en hun impact op het overbrengen van emoties in beelden. Hoe vertaal je elementen zoals emotie, geur en geluid naar visuele componenten? We bespreken de invloed van kleur op doelgroepen en merken, en hoe je kleuren kunt gebruiken om een boodschap te versterken. Aesthetic Aspects of Image Use

This week, we explore the aesthetic aspects of image use. What does socially responsible use of images mean? How does your choice of visuals influence your target audience? We discuss the role of images in social media and the spirit of the times (zeitgeist). You will engage in a creative exercise where you create an appropriate visual story for a selected target audience.

Typografie en Beeldtaal

Typography plays a crucial role in enhancing visual language. This week, you will learn about the function of fonts and how to use graphic design to strengthen your visual story. You will develop your own typography and apply it to your visual language. In the creative exercise, you will create a visual story that is powerfully supported by appropriate typography.

Manipulating images

This week, you will explore various digital tools for editing and manipulating images. What is the function of layers in an image? How do you add motion to your visuals, moving from 2D to 3D? We will learn how to create a strong (animated) visual story using tools like Photoshop and AI, and experiment with their possibilities.

Mixed Media

This week focuses on mixed media. We explore how to move from 2D to 3D and develop an animated visual story. The power of stop motion and GIFs will be covered, as well as combining animation, existing images, and video. In the creative exercise, you will create an applied visual story using mixed media from your own professional context.
